1.4% of all greenhouse gas emissions are contributed by shoe production. Although shoes do not require electricity or power-driving components, it produces an abnormal amount of carbon dioxide emission of 13.6 kilograms
Materials being Used
In the production of shoes, plastic is a very common material to be used to make shoes lighter, faster, better and to provide comfort (a combination of plastic and other materials is stitched and glued in complex ways that make it even more tedious to recycle.)
Negative Impacts of Landfills
Used shoes are being thrown along with other wastes to form landfills. Not only are they unappealing to view, but they are also the cause of the majority of pollutions. When waste is being decomposed in landfills, toxic substances are being released, causing water flowing through these landfills to be toxic. These toxic liquids are known as leachate that may potentially flow into water bodies and contaminate them. As there are little to no oxygen in packed landfills, the decomposition rate of wastes is slowed down drastically. As such, the decomposition rate of these landfills may take up a million years.
